About the event

The Towne Bank Outer Banks Marathon is a standout coastal race offering a fast, flat course that winds through the scenic barrier islands of North Carolina. As the region’s oldest continuously running road race, it’s well-suited for first-time marathoners and runners chasing a new personal best. The Outer Banks is at sea level and the point-to-point course is mainly flat. There are two points of course elevation. The first is in Nags Head Woods Preserve around mile 12 of the marathon course . The second is crossing the 35 foot tall Washington-Baum Bridge leading to Roanoke Island at mile 23. The course showcases the Outer Banks’ unique blend of maritime forest, open water views, and classic coastal towns. Along the way, enthusiastic spectators and local support create an energizing atmosphere. Post-race, runners are treated to southern barbecue, live music, and a beer garden—all included. The weekend also includes a half marathon, 5K, 8K, and fun runs, making it a full festival of fitness and community spirit.
