About the event
The Rio de Janeiro Marathon is one of South America’s most scenic and iconic races. Held annually since 1979, it features a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K, all set against Rio’s dramatic coastal and urban backdrop. The main event begins and ends in Flamengo Park, taking runners past legendary neighborhoods like Copacabana, Ipanema, Botafogo, and Leblon, with uninterrupted views of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Serra do Mar mountains. As a World Athletics Label Road Race and AIMS-certified event, it attracts a competitive international field, especially for the Desafio Cidade Maravilhosa—a two-day challenge combining the half marathon on Saturday with the marathon on Sunday. With strong local support lining the course and sights like Christ the Redeemer watching from above, the Rio Marathon is as much about atmosphere as athletic achievement.
