Detroit Free Press Marathon
About the event
The Detroit Free Press Marathon is a one-of-a-kind international road race held each October, offering a certified, Boston-qualifying course that crosses borders twice. Runners begin in downtown Detroit, ascend the Ambassador Bridge into Canada at sunrise, loop through Windsor, Ontario, and return to the U.S. via the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel—home to the only underwater mile in any marathon. With multiple race options, including two half marathons (international and U.S.-only), a 5K, a relay, and youth events, the weekend draws thousands of athletes seeking a mix of speed, logistics, and novelty. The course also showcases Detroit’s waterfront, historic neighborhoods, and great local support, making this an urban racing experience that stands apart.
