With an impressive 51% of participants qualifying, this course offers a total elevation drop of 3,661 feet, starting from a high of 4,036 feet and descending to 375 feet. Ideal for runners seeking to leverage downhill momentum, the entire route is paved and culminates on a grassy field in the park. Beginning in front of the Volcano Golf Course, the marathon takes you through Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, showcasing breathtaking views of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Let the dawn chorus of native Hawaiian birds inspire your strides as you navigate the mainly downhill path, punctuated by a few gentle uphill stretches, amidst the lush Hawaiian rainforest, residential, and agricultural landscapes. At Mile 7.67, enjoy the continuous descent until you reach Herbert Shipman Park, where you’ll cross the finish line on a scenic grass field by the Armory parking lot.
