Great Glen Ultra Marathon
About the event
The Great Glen Ultra is one of Scotland’s most demanding endurance races, covering 72 miles (116 km) from Fort William to Inverness along the historic Great Glen. Runners have 22 hours to complete the journey, navigating canal towpaths, forestry trails, and sections of quiet roads. The route begins in Corpach and follows the waymarked Great Glen Way, including the High Route, which offers sweeping views over Loch Ness and the surrounding Highlands. The first 30 miles roll steadily before the major climbs after Fort Augustus test stamina and resolve. Solo runners take on the challenge unsupported, with marshaled checkpoints every 10 miles and an additional water stop at Grotaig, 49 miles in. Strict cut-off times are enforced for safety, ensuring the event remains a true running challenge rather than a walking one. Each participant must carry mandatory kit, and the entry includes a race memento, goody bag, and technical race shirt or vest.
